money mission

What is Money Mission?

Money Mission is a free online financial literacy simulation designed to expand the financial literacy of today's youth. Teens create an avatar and live, work and make real life financial decisions in the game’s simulated village, Mission Heights. Money Mission gives youth an opportunity to consider the financial obligations they face and how they will deal with them in real life.

Students will:

  • purchase cars and stocks
  • manage their savings, checking and credit accounts
  • set budgets for food, clothes, and cell phones
  • take advantage of simulated opportunities
  • learn the importance of saving for retirement

Getting started: Playing Money Mission is easy and fun!

1st... You will create an avatar
Players choose every aspect of their avatar from a library of custom designs, allowing the player to interject their own unique personality while playing.

2nd... You will choose a vehicle
In addition to creating an avatar, choosing a vehicle is another level of customization for the player. Each vehicle has a corresponding car payment, insurance, maintenance and fuel cost, creating a lesson in opportunity cost for the player. In fact, the cost of fuel for the vehicle they choose is tied to the real life oil market. Therefore, if oil prices go up any further, they will probably choose to walk. Seriously... if the price of oil goes up, so does the cost of operating their vehicle.

Weekly Lessons:
During each session, players are encouraged to make a wide range of decisions, including buying a car, trading stocks, and holding down a job. The choices players make are tied to their avatar’s happiness meter, a barometer designed to demonstrate how good financial decisions require life balance. Those who navigate this simulated world successfully will have a chance to win a scholarship.

Money Mission Scholarship Opportunity:

In addition to better preparing students to make financial decisions, college-bound high school seniors can compete for scholarships. Registered Money Mission users must submit a written essay of 400-800 words about what they learned playing Money Mission to be eligible for the scholarship. Scholarship recipients will be selected from those who submit an essay. The number of scholarships and the amount of each scholarship is announced at the start of each session.

Money Mission is about the choices we make in life and how those choices impact our lives.
